He also held several other diplomatic assignments, including posts in Pakistan, Sudan, and Angola.

High-Profile Departures from the Trump Administration

This is the second high-profile departure involving a senior U.S. official in recent weeks.

Adm. Alvin Holsey, the commander of U.S. Southern Command, which oversees U.S. military operations in Central and South America, is stepping down from his position. His departure comes as the Pentagon intensifies operations against vessels in the Caribbean Sea that the Trump administration alleges are involved in drug smuggling.

The Pentagon has rapidly deployed approximately 10,000 troops to the region as part of what it describes as a major counterdrug and counterterrorism initiative.

Holsey’s decision to step down, less than a year into what is typically a three-year assignment and during one of the most significant operations of his 37-year military career, has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his departure.

However, one current and one former U.S. official, both speaking anonymously about personnel matters, said Holsey had expressed concerns about the mission and the attacks on the vessels allegedly involved in drug trafficking.

In a statement, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not mention any disagreement with the four-star commander.

“On behalf of the Department of War,” Hegseth said, “we extend our deepest gratitude to Admiral Alvin Holsey for his more than 37 years of distinguished service to our nation as he plans to retire at year’s end.”

Some Pentagon officials have also said there were policy disagreements involving Venezuela that Holsey opposed and that were inconsistent with the Trump administration’s approach.

Trump Jokes About Supreme Court Nominations

The latest development comes as Trump hinted this week that he may already have someone in mind if another U.S. Supreme Court vacancy arises.

During a White House ceremony, Trump jokingly suggested that Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, should be nominated to the Supreme Court. He quipped that lawmakers from both parties would quickly vote to confirm Cruz because they would be eager to see him leave the Senate.

Trump made the remarks Monday during the official launch of the Trump Accounts program, a savings initiative championed by Cruz and included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

The president praised Cruz’s legal abilities before jokingly suggesting that he would make a strong Supreme Court justice. His comments drew laughter from those in attendance.

“In fact, somebody said, ‘Would you ever appoint him to the United States Supreme Court?’ Because he’s a brilliant lawyer, Ted. I said, ‘Well, he’s the only one I can think of that’s going to get 100 votes,’” Trump said, according to the Washington Examiner.

“All Republicans will vote for him, all Democrats will vote for him, because they want to get him the h*** out of the Senate,” Trump added, drawing laughter from those in the Oval Office.

“If I was having a hard time with getting the votes, I would appoint Ted Cruz. I’d get 100%, guaranteed,” the president said.

There’s been another major update involving President Donald Trump’s administration.
