Two general aviation aircraft violated temporary flight restrictions over Bedminster, New Jersey, Sunday afternoon \u2014 where President Trump was attending the LIV Golf event at Trump National. NORAD scrambled F-16 fighter jets, intercepted both aircraft, and escorted them out of the restricted area. The incident ended without further incident, at least as far as what has been made public.<\/p>\n

The FAA had two active temporary flight restrictions of type \u201cVIP\u201d over the Bedminster area, running from Friday, August 7th through Sunday, and two additional restrictions over nearby Morristown, New Jersey, on Sunday alone. These aren\u2019t subtle. TFRs are extensively publicized through NOTAMs \u2014 Notices to Air Missions \u2014 that any licensed pilot is required to check before departure. Flying into a presidential TFR isn\u2019t like missing a speed limit sign. It requires actively ignoring published aviation restrictions.<\/p>\n

As of this writing, no information has been released on the identities of the individuals in either aircraft or the types of aircraft involved. Whether this was negligence, poor flight planning, confusion, or something more concerning remains unknown. NORAD and civil authorities have not indicated any further action at this time.<\/p>\n

What this incident adds to is an already sobering picture of aviation security around the president. Earlier this month, a helicopter carrying Trump nearly had a significant problem in Washington airspace. Just days ago, an armed man was caught near a Trump golf club moments before the president was scheduled to arrive. The Butler assassination attempt a year ago remains fresh in the minds of everyone responsible for keeping the president alive.<\/p>\n

These incidents don\u2019t all connect. Airspace violations near presidential TFRs happen with some regularity \u2014 pilots make mistakes, navigation systems fail, people don\u2019t check NOTAMs they should have checked. The overwhelming majority are innocent errors by people who quickly comply once intercepted and have no hostile intent whatsoever.<\/p>\n

But innocent errors have a way of becoming catastrophic ones in the wrong circumstances. The Secret Service\u2019s Butler report confirmed that 102 radio transmissions warning about the shooter went unheard before the first shot was fired. The lesson of Butler \u2014 the most expensive lesson in American security in years \u2014 is that errors compound, gaps multiply, and the unthinkable can happen when enough things go wrong simultaneously.<\/p>\n

NORAD responded quickly. The aircraft were escorted out. The president\u2019s security was maintained. That\u2019s the system working as designed.<\/p>\n

The question worth asking is whether \u201cworking as designed\u201d is sufficient when the president has now been the target of multiple assassination attempts, when Iran has publicly displayed assassination threat banners at its Supreme Leader\u2019s funeral, and when the existing security record around this presidency includes multiple documented failures that could have been catastrophic.<\/p>\n

The F-16s got there. This time, that was enough.<\/p>\n
