A deeply personal interview has provided a troubling new glimpse into the health challenges facing a former president as his family continues to rally around him.<\/p>\n

His son became emotional while discussing the situation, describing what the family has been witnessing behind closed doors and acknowledging that the experience has been difficult to watch.<\/p>\n

Former President Joe Biden\u2019s prostate cancer has spread further through his body and is causing significant pain, according to his son Hunter Biden, who discussed his 83-year-old father\u2019s condition during an interview with BBC Newsnight published Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further,\u201d Hunter Biden told interviewer Paddy O\u2019Connell.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really sad to watch,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Hunter described the disease as \u201cvery painful\u201d and \u201cvery debilitating\u201d as his father continues undergoing treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing that I\u2019d say about my dad, about his health right now, is I wish he would complain more, because it\u2019s not good,\u201d Hunter said.<\/p>\n

Biden announced in May 2025, several months after leaving the White House, that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had already metastasized to his bones.<\/p>\n

His office said at the time that the cancer appeared to be \u201chormone-sensitive,\u201d which would allow doctors to pursue treatments aimed at managing the disease.<\/p>\n

Despite the progression described by Hunter, he said his father remains active and continues following public affairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s still doing his thing,\u201d Hunter said. \u201cHe so believes in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former first lady Jill Biden offered a similar assessment during a June appearance on \u201cThe View,\u201d acknowledging that things had \u201cslowed down\u201d for her husband since his diagnosis while saying he remained busy.<\/p>\n

Hunter called his father the \u201cbest father, the best husband, the best grandfather\u201d and said the former president remains at the \u201ccenter of our family.\u201d<\/p>\n

The interview also turned to Hunter\u2019s years-long battle with drug addiction and the toll he believes it took on his father.<\/p>\n

When O\u2019Connell asked whether his addiction had made Joe Biden\u2019s life and health worse, Hunter answered, \u201cOf course I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what addiction does,\u201d Hunter said.<\/p>\n

Hunter said his struggles affected Jill Biden, his children, other relatives and personal relationships, \u201cbut, in particular, to my dad, who never let go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad never let me off the hook,\u201d Hunter said, while recalling that his father also made clear that \u201cwhen I was ready to come back, the door was open.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is the singular thing that saved me \u2014 that the door was left open,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Hunter also rejected the idea that families must necessarily allow someone suffering from addiction to reach \u201crock bottom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people always say that you\u2019ve got to let an addict hit rock-bottom,\u201d Hunter said, adding that people he knew who reached that point were \u201ceither dead or in jail.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hunter\u2019s addiction, including his use of crack cocaine, has been publicly documented for years and was discussed extensively in his 2021 memoir, \u201cBeautiful Things.\u201d<\/p>\n

The struggle came after another devastating chapter for the Biden family when Joe Biden\u2019s eldest son, Beau Biden, died from brain cancer in 2015 at age 46.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnconditional love doesn\u2019t mean love without consequences,\u201d Hunter said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean love without accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hunter also reflected on his father\u2019s June 2024 presidential debate against Donald Trump, a performance that intensified questions about Biden\u2019s age and fitness and contributed to mounting Democratic pressure for him to abandon his reelection campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew something was wrong,\u201d Hunter said, describing himself as \u201cshocked\u201d while watching the debate from California, The Hill\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n

Biden ultimately withdrew from the presidential race on July 21, 2024, and has maintained a relatively limited public profile since leaving office, although he has occasionally delivered political speeches and is preparing a memoir expected around the November midterm elections.<\/p>\n
